If you feel hopeless about ever being able to improve mobility or alleviate pain, you're not alone.
Studies show that 30.9% of folks feel frustrated about not being able to change their current (im)mobility state. There is even a condition called kinesiophobia, a fear of movement or physical activity due to concerns about pain or injury. It's present in around 79% of people with musculoskeletal pain. But lack of daily mobility will do much more harm than a minor injury.
Physical inactivity is one of the leading risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and death worldwide. Maybe you know you can alter your (im)mobility. But you just don't do it because the task feels overwhelming.
The truth is… We believe we need to prepare much more in imagination than reality. We can kid ourselves into believing that until we’ve got the right environment, we can’t move forward in the way we want to. But no one is coming to save you. Life isn’t waiting for you.
At all.
Time will continue to tick along while you wait and try to create the optimal circumstances to finally make a move. Although I’m writing this letter, I am much more into doing than theorizing.
5 Ways to Overcome Mindset Barriers for Better Mobility
1. Try Therapy:
Use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify & change negative thought patterns about movement and build a positive proactive mindset.
2. Relax & Breathe:
By breathing deeply & slowly, you signal to your parasympathetic system that stretch ≠ danger, so you can progress further.
3. Set Small Goals:
Start with simple, achievable steps. Commit yourself to at least do the 3-minute video from this email (both R & L side).
4. Get Support:
Studies show that adherence to goals is 65% higher when feeling supported. That can be your partner, a friend, or me as your coach :)
5. Learn & Understand:
Your body can do what you teach it to do. Understanding what works for you makes you your own mobility guru.
I keep getting the same questions, so each week I’ll answer one for you:
What if I enroll & fail?
Too many people think they need to be flexible to work with me. What is there to fail? You are not deciding to enroll to impress me with your flexibility, but to bring you from your current:
Waking up stiff every day
Feeling older than you are
Being depressed about your inability to move without pain or restriction
Feeling guilty about burdening others with your own limitations
To:
Having a routine that matches your lifestyle
Feeling & moving like you're 10 years younger
Knowing what works for your body
Ability to help yourself whenever you need it
